We got word a half hour ago that they were going to be bringing in a large number of injured from a Muggle village just north of London. I'm nervous since I've been called into service but no one is here yet and we're waiting. I think the waiting is the hardest part and there's a rumor that several Aurors were injured. It's scary to think that even seasoned Aurors can be hurt in the line of duty.I've managed to get together my supplies and I've made sure I've got the potions on my belt fully stocked. Healer Redmond has been bustling about, finding empty rooms, and we've set up a triage with the mediwitches and wizards right in the lobby. I hope I don't mess things up too badly. I hope I'm able to help.I bloody well hope I remember how to do Muggle stitches.Blimey, I may throw up.
The smell of smoke rises beyond the trees of the forest we've Apparated to. Tricky business apparating into a clearing you've never seen apart from recon maps in Moody's office. Our orders (barked nonetheless) were to remain hidden in the shadows until the entire squadron was in place. Orders are orders and we don't question them... but they have to be insane to think we're just going to let the Death Eaters torch the muggle homes and hex them repeatedly while we just sit there and watch!"Potter!" Moody barks. "You'll lead Hicks, Spencer and Corner around to the northwest quadrant and hold your position until you see my signal. You are NOT to engage the enemy until we have secured back-up for everyone! Are we clear?" He says eyeing me with that infernal all-seeing, spinning eyeball."Yes sir," I say through gritted teeth. Just bloody great! As if I couldn't shake off the maggot, now I have to lead Corner in!"Here are the coordinates!" Moody says pointing to the map. "On three, Team Alpha, Potter that's you! On three..."Raising my wand, I wait for Moody to count back from three... two... one and concentrating on the location, I disapparate thinking about how I'm going to let Ron know that I'm going to be late tonight.
That was worse than my stomach before a Quidditch Match"You alright there, Mr. Weasley," Healer Redmon asks and I give him a quick nod and take my place next to him. "I do hope you aren't coming down with something.""Nerves," I mutter and swallow hard as the first portkey arrives. "Right then, we're on?"Three more injured arrive and I steel my shoulders and begin working. The first patient I reach is covered head to toe in giant red blisters. "Hi, my name is Ron Weasley," I say softly and bend near the table. "Can you tell me your name?"I begin dipping gauze in water with my wand and the man's voice is so low I can barely hear him. "Men in masks," he wheezes and sighs as I wrap his arm in the wet gauze. He shivers slightly. "Set my house a fire."I twitch slightly and mutter a cooling charm on him. He sighs again and I continue to bandage him, using the unction that Healer Redmon slapped in my palm. "Michael," he wheezes. "My name is Michael. I was so hot...I was on fire you know.""I'm going to take good care of you Michael." I say softly and drizzle some sleeping draught in his mouth. "You rest."Bloody hell I'm going to be late meeting Harry.
"What is your position?" I hear Moody in my ear."Northwest quadrant and holding our position Sir," I respond and signal to Hicks to double back toward the tree line on my right and take his position. The sound of blasts in the distance as another house goes up in flames nearly knocks Hicks over but I watch him crouch low and make his way toward the trees.Corner and Spencer have moved around to my left and we descend toward the village when Moody shouts in my ear, "MOVE IN MOVE IN NOW NOW NOW!"We take off at a run through the trees and bursting through the shrubbery leading into the backyard of one of the Muggle homes, I watch as Spencer levels his wand at a Death Eater hexing a man who'd just run out of his burning home. The screams in the village, coupled with the shouted hexes are almost a pleasant din as I run toward a Death Eater who's leveled his wand at a small child crying in the middle of the street. She's clutching a teddy bear and her tear-streaked face is the last thing I see as I snatch her at a run and rolling away from the Death Eater's hex, I set her down near a phone booth and barely mutter "portus" as I tap her bear and watch her disappear. Turning quickly, I send a stinging hex at the Death Eater and watch as Corner pins him down with a barrel run to the stomach.I hear a woman scream and I turn to find a Death Eater raising her off the ground with a levitating charm as another banishes her clothing."Can't get your kicks at home?" I shout and send a leg-locker charm to the one running away from me. Spencer comes up behind me and together we run toward the lone Death Eater still holding the Muggle woman up high in the air. "I'll get the girl," Spencer hisses."Oh good, I get the asshole!" I reply with a smile.
I've just finished up bandaging Michael when I look across the crowded room and see a little girl clutching a teddy bear. There are lashes on her face and it looks as if she has several pieces of glass embedded in her arm.I move to her and kneel on the floor beside her."Hi, I'm Ron," I say softly and she clutches her bear tighter. "I had a teddy just like that when I was a little boy.""The bad men tried to take it away when my house," she sniffles. "When my house went splodey.""Splodey?" I ask and she nods."Yes, the windows went splodey," She hold out her arm. "See I've got glass her where I held up my arm.""Would you like me to take care of you?" I ask and she clutches her bear tighter. "You won't let them take my bear will you?" "'Course not," I say softly. "What is your name?""Maple," she says softly. "Papa said I was made after having Maple syrup but I don't see what that has to do with anything."I chuckle and pick her up, "Luv, I'm sure you'll understand when you're older.""Everyone's always saying that!"I set her on a cot and begin cleaning the wound on her face. She's obviously a Muggle and I hide my wand as I slowly stitch her wound. "This might sting a bit," I say softly. "Tell me do you know where your parents are?"She shakes her head and I fight back a curse. "We'll find them, Maple."If it takes all night
The Death Eater turns almost in slow-motion toward me, releasing the woman from his hex and as Spencer runs to catch her with his own levitation spell, I cast a severing charm on the DE's robes and hiss when he side-steps it."Thought you would prove more challenging, Potter." The voice is enough to bring my run to an almost screeching halt."Malfoy," I hiss. "Should've known you'd get your jollies off stripping women. What? Narcissa not doing it for you?" I smile when I sense his breathing hitch. Remind me to send Mrs. Tonks a huge thank-you owl with a lifetime supply of chocolate for teaching me to read signals during combat. He advances toward me and begins to lift his wand when an explosion behind him sends him crashing to the floor. I hear several Aurors cry out in pain and I run in through the blackened smoke, hoping to find someone alive.A moan to my left and a hand on my boot has me levelling my wand at the ground where I find Hicks' body. "Potter," he groans. "Inside... muggles inside... couldn't... couldn't reach them," he coughs and sends thick clouds of black smoke toward my face where I've crouched down to assess the damage. His face is bloodied but I can barely see the rest of his body through the smoke."Can you stand?" I ask through coughs and when he shakes his head, I tap his dogtags and turn them into a portkey. When he disappears, I keep low to the ground and make my way further into the billowing smoke. My lungs burn, but in the distance I can hear a woman's soft cries and I know I have to get to her. I try not to think of the pain in my chest or the squelching sounds my boots are making on the floor as I head toward the sound.
I finish up with Maple and even more wounded begin to arrive. The smell of smoke is thick in the air of the triage we've set up. It's really total chaos and I nearly retch at the smell of burned flesh. "Weasley!" Healer Redmon shouts. "We've got four over here that need immediate treatment!"I rush to his side and I gasp when I look down at an Auror covered completely in blood. Part of his face is missing, you can see his teeth, and he can barely talk his voice is so raw. Healer Redmon pushes me slightly and I move to the next patient. "What have we got?" I ask the mediwitch."A Muggle gun blast to the stomach," she begins ticking off. "Extreme blood loss and burns on his left forearm. "What about the right," I ask as I use my wand to cut the man's shirt free. "Any burns there.""No, just the Dark Mark."My eyes focus on the face of the victim and I'm really not surprised to see that it's Adrian Pucey. He always was a smarmy prat. There's blood in the corner of his mouth and he rasps, "Help me."There's a part of me that's torn, he's a Slytherin and a Death Eater, but in the end my heart wins out. I do several cleansing charms on his abdomen and order the mediwitch to go get a supply of blood from the blood bank. She dashes off and I stare at the gunshot wound for a moment."How bad?""Bad," I say through gritted teeth. "Real bad.""Am I going to die?" "Not if I can help it," I growl and reach for the vial of Raptured Bliss potion on my belt. "Drink this and when you wake up maybe you won't go to Azkaban."I help him drink the potion and he whispers, "I was misled."I nod and the mediwitch comes back with the bottle of blood. "Let's infuse him and I'll get to work on his stomach."Bloody hell, I'm going to be really late getting off work.
Making my way through what I assume was a house, I hear Moody's voice in my ear."Potter, where the hell are you?""Roasting marshmallows," I respond and gag when the smell of burning flesh hits me and mutter, "or something like that.""I need your arse out here now! We've got wounded and you're faster with portkeys than anyone else.""I'm..." I cough and hear a woman cry out."Someone there?" she cries out. "Please... help me... I'm here," she says through sobs. She sounds tired and I quickly send sparks out through one of the windows at least, I hope it's a window... could be a door... not really certain to keep Moody off my arse."Where are you?" I call out and wait to hear her faint response before turning toward the sound. I find her crouched inside the remains of a blasted wardrobe. The doors are barely on the hinges."Are you...""I'm one of the good guys," I say with a smile and approach her slowly. "Are you hurt?" When she shakes her head, I extend my hand and holster my wand with my other hand behind my back before she's able to see it. "We need to get out of here," I tell her and attempt to slide my hand behind her to help her up when I see the blood trailing from her temple."Does your head hurt?" I ask her and watch as her eyes go blank and roll back. Tapping her necklace, I create a portkey and watch as Evelyn, according to the nameplate on her necklace, disappears.I hear gunshots outside and quickly run out to find Corner staring at a gun in his hand and a Death Eater drop to the ground several meters in front of him."WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?" I shout at him as he stares at me blankly."I... I just thought..." he drops the gun and backs away from the now groaning Death Eater. Fuck! I can't believe I'm doing this!"Just hold on!" I tap his mask and watch as he disappears to First Aid. I wheel around to shake Michael out of his daze when the cold voice of Severus Snape slices through the air."Still the hero, I see.""Still the coward," I answer advancing on him."Tut, tut, tut," I hear the familiar voice behind me. "I wouldn't do that if I were you," Malfoy croons.
I manage to sew Pucey's intestines back in and the mediwizard and witch take him up to the spell damage ward. Kinglsey blocked it off and all the Death Eater injuries are heading in there. Good! Maybe he'll get an autograph of Lockhart's joined up writing!I glance around the room and find a woman having a seizure and two mediwitches holding her down. I dodge the injured, jumping over one body lying on the floor, and finally reach her side."What's your assessment?" I do a calming charm on the woman and she gradually stops the seizure. Her breathing is ragged and I snap at the mediwitch. "Assement!""Head trauma, blunt force," she pants. "Spell damage too--Crucio""She feels hot," I bark. "Not Crucio...Damn it I've seen this before!"My mind races and I remember the night that Harry was injured during a duel before the third Horcrux. "Bloody hell," I shout. "Ice packs now and a cooling charm. I need 50 cc's of a Fever potion--a strong one."Right embarassing to forget the name of the potion. As the mediwitch runs off Healer Redmon stops next to me, "Everything under control, Weasley?""She was hit with an Inflamari Spell," I mutter as I do cooling charms on her body. "Harry was hit with one when--""You know what to do then?""Yeah, Hermione taught me," I reply and turn the woman's head to the side to look at her temple. A open wound shaped like the head of a snake adorns her temple and I shake my head before moving my wand over the wound.Lucius Malfoy
"Right again Severus," Malfoy says behind me. "The hero has to save the day otherwise what good is he?"My eyes remain fixed on Snape's. The devil before me is more dangerous than the devil behind me. Malfoy follows orders and he knows not to overstep his bounds, Snape on the other hand..."Inner turmoil?" Snape asks tilting his head to the side. "Lucius may do as he is told, but what makes you so certain that I will not? Have I not always dueled you fairly?""Spare me the theatrics. I've seen you in action and to be honest, I'm not impressed."He smirks and I sense Malfoy's body nearly press against mine. When I step forward, I'm much closer to Snape than I've ever wanted to be in my life."I would be more careful with your thoughts than your words, Potter. Your mind betrays you," he whispers against my ear. It takes everything I have not to gag at the thought of his greasy hair caressing my cheek. "How IS Weasley these days?" I shove him back but I don't remember pushing him as my hands are clenched at my sides."Oh my," Lucius smiles as he rounds me. "Wandless magic. You must have hit some nerve, Severus."Shit! I quickly race in my mind to all the doors and mentally lock each one down but the hex that hits me topples me back and I wince in pain as I feel the blood gush from my side."Mind your thoughts!" Snape hisses and advances on me. I cast several severing charms at him but it's his own hex that sends him hurtling through the air and crashing against the far wall. Okay, so Kingsley was right about shielding properly! When Malfoy raises his wand and the familiar green light forms around the wand, I roll away and watch as Moody hexes Malfoy from the back with a leg-locker and a combination binding and stinging hex. He barks an order at one of the aurors behind him and I feel my legs give out when I try to stand."Potter!" he yells at me and slaps my face. "Wake up! Wake up boy!" I vaguely hear him curse when the tug behind my navel sends me hurtling through space and I land with a loud thud on a medical bed. Bloody hell! How the hell do I explain THIS to Ron!
At this point I'm working mechanically. I've treated so many injured and lost two patients already that their blending together. There's a loud thunk on the bed behind me and a hush falls over the Triage. I grab my wand and turn, waving it over the Auror lying on the bed, and I shout to the mediwitch that it's a curse I've never seen before. Nothing has prepared me for thisI manage to catch a thready pulse with my wand and suddenly the room explodes into noise. I look down at the patient on the stretcher and my heart stops. The sound in the room fades slightly as I look at Harry's body lying on the bed. He's pale and motionless, and there's a slice through the middle of his shirt. His chest is slashed open and I quickly wave my wand as Kingsley tries to pull me back. "You can't work on him," Kingsley snarls. "No fucking way.""Go fuck yourself, Kingsley," I growl and shove him away from me. "There's no one else."I move closer and try to push back my panic. I begin to assess the damage as the clock chimes midnight."God damn it, Harry," I mutter as I open his shirt and begin healing his wound. "You're right on time...Don't you think this was a bit of an extreme way to get here though."I won't lose him...not now
